Between The Carolinas (Hey burner! Records), the debut album by Phil Barry, is a haunted batch of folk-rock road songs. Written and recorded on a beat up 1977 Guild D-25 acoustic guitar, the songs breathe hazy memories from too much time spent away. Phil got his start touring and recording with Michigan rock band Knee Deep Shag. After four albums and thousands of shows Phil took a full time position playing guitar for Warner Bros. recording artist Rachael Yamagata.  With Rachael he toured Europe and the States including extended tours with Ryan Adams and Ray Lamontagne.

Phil Barry

Between the Carolinas

Phil Barry brings his haunted collection of moody folk songs to his debut Between The Carolinas. The gentle strum of a 1977 Guild acoustic guitar is the primary instrument here. Opening with "Crying Shame" it brings to mind the somber ballads John Lennon was known for. Following this, the catchy jangle and echoing beats of "The Spaces" is a memorable single that will appeal to fans of David Mead, Adam Merrin, and Elliot Smith for sure. The title track "Between the Carolinas" is perfect music for those long car trips on I-95, with a steady rythym and multi-layered guitar and vocal tracks. Another gem here is "Never Gonna Be Your Man" with it's smart verses and smart slide guitar riffs, similar to Wilco here. The track "Dark Star" lumbers along, like a weight on Barry's shoulders. The darkness of love lost permeates the music deeply and is definitely worth a listen on your ipod after a long night of heartache.

"Between The Carolinas"
(Hey Burner!,2008)

"Between the Carolinas" is the debut album from Michigan based singer / songwriter Phil Barry. The sound of this album can be described as a mix of folkrock, California 60's pop and Country music. There are traces of Simon and Garfunkel, The Jayhawks and Crosby Stills Nash and Young in Phil Barry's songs. This is only a 9 track album with a running time of 29 minutes so you will find yourself listening to the first song again within no time. There's a great moody feeling over "Between the Carolinas" and I like Barry's voice quite a lot, a nice album so to speak. Highlights: The spaces, Between the Carolinas

Between the Carolinas
(Hey Burner!)

Hard to believe this is a self-released disc only available as a CD-R...?!? Though this is Phil Barry's debut album, he is no newcomer to the world of music. Barry was previously in the band Knee Deep Shag before accepting a position playing guitar for Rachael Yamagata. But our guess is that in the future Between the Carolinas will be what most listeners will remember as their introduction to Phil's music. Anyone who ever loved the music of pure pop artists like Teenage Fanclub, Alex Chilton, and The Pernice Brothers will almost certainly fall in love with this man's music the first time they hear it. His songs are soft and smooth and driven by the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar. The gliding melodies are incredibly effective...and Barry is one of those guys with a voice so good it'll make you squirm. Several of Phil's songs have already been licensed for television shows...so our guess is that it won't be long before some savvy record label snaps this guy up. Killer cuts include "Crying Shame," "Between the Carolinas," "Never Gonna Be Your Man," and "Mercury." Recommended. (Rating: 5++)
